HIGH BAIL FOR 12 CHARGED IN FATAL BEATING

Twelve men who allegedly inflicted fatal injuries on a Hyde Park man outside a downtown nightclub were held on high bail at their arraignments in the Boston Municipal Court today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

The victim, 22-year-old Jose Alicea, was removed from life support this morning, three days after he was attacked by a large group of men outside Club 33 on Stanhope Street early on Aug. 21. Arrested shortly after the beating and arraigned this morning on charges of aggravated assault and battery were:

12.MICHAEL WELCH (D.O.B. 5/17/82) of Lynn, represented by attorney Russell Sobelman.

Accommodating requests by Assistant District Attorney Cory Flashner, Judge Michael Coyne set bail at $100,000 cash for all defendants except Llavona, whose identity as Martinez was discovered during a search for interstate warrants and had an extensive criminal record. Coyne set his bail at $200,000 and additionally revoked Ruskyn Garcia’s open bail on an Essex County drug trafficking case.

Flashner told the court that the defendants – nine of whom were wearing black tuxedos with red vests – had come to Club 33 after attending the funeral of a friend killed in a Lynn motorcycle collision.

Alicea was also at the club with a small group of his own friends. There was no trouble inside the establishment. Shortly before 2:30 Friday morning, however, as the club was closing, Alicea had a conversation with some of the defendants. That conversation became a verbal altercation, Flashner said, and the verbal altercation became heated with shouting and cursing.

“Mr. Alicea was set upon by the defendants and was severely beaten,” Flashner said in court. “Mr. Alicea was left in the street bleeding.”

The defendants, Flashner said, fled to a white stretch limousine but were stopped by responding Boston Police before they could leave the area. Of 14 male occupants detained by the responding officers, the 12 defendants were identified at the scene as having taken part in the beating.

“Significant portions of the incident were captured on video from cameras directed at the street and mounted on nearby buildings,” Flashner said.

Alicea was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with severe head trauma. He died in his hospital room.

All 12 defendants will return to the BMC on Sept. 4 for a pre-trial conference.
