BOSTON, June 20, 2012—A Charlestown man who failed in his alleged bid to rob a bank was held on high bail today after another Charlestown man tackled him in the parking lot, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ROBERT KROL, Jr. (D.O.B. 3/6/80) was arraigned in Charlestown District Court this morning on a single count of unarmed robbery for the incident yesterday morning at the  Cooperative Bank on Main Street. Assistant District Attorney Peter Pasciucco recommended that he be held on $75,000 cash bail and Judge Lawrence McCormick imposed $50,000.

Krol allegedly entered the bank at about 8:45 yesterday morning wearing a wig, sunglasses, and baseball cap as a disguise, immediately attracting the attention of bank personnel. He approached a teller and allegedly passed a note reading “All 100’s, 50’s, 20’s, no alarm no die packs be fast.” The teller passed him a small amount of money, which he allegedly took before leaving the building.

A 59-year-old Charlestown man present inside the bank observed these events and followed Krol outside, where he tackled the suspect in the parking lot. That civilian stood about three inches shorter and weighed about 50 pounds less than the suspect but was able to restrain Krol until Boston Police responded moments later.

“That’s the real spirit of Charlestown,” Conley said. “They may not make a movie about him, and we certainly don’t want anyone to get hurt being a hero, but you’ve got to hand it to a guy who can tackle a bank robbery suspect half his age.”

Though he sustained cuts and scratches to his arms and knees, the civilian declined medical treatment. Responding officers seized a wig, sunglasses, and a Boston Bruins hat from the ground next to Krol and a sum of cash – believed to be from the bank – from his person.

Krol is represented by attorney Joseph Perullo. He will return to court on July 18.
