High Bail for Iowa Men Charged with Firearm Offenses

BOSTON, Nov. 10, 2015— Two Iowa men were held on high bail at their arraignment today on charges they travelled to Boston game convention armed with an assault rifle and shotgun, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KEVIN NORTON (D.O.B. 12/30/96) of Ames, Iowa, and JAMES STUMBO (D.O.B. 4/2/88) of Boone, Iowa, were arraigned this morning in Suffolk Superior Court on indictments charging each with unlawful possession of a shotgun, unlawful possession of a rifle, unlawful possession of a large capacity weapon, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, and unlawful possession of ammunition.  Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson set bail for each defendant in the amount of $150,000.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph Janezic told the court that Norton and Stumbo traveled to Boston in August in order to attend the Pokemon World Championship at the Hynes Convention Center.  Prior to their arrival at the event on Aug. 20, Boston Police were notified of concerning online statements and threats allegedly made against the event and an individual attendee, prosecutors said.

Officers stopped both men upon their arrival at the convention center and issued no trespass orders.  Norton allegedly made statements to the officers that the men had a shotgun and rifle in Norton’s vehicle, prosecutors said.

Police executing a search warrant on the vehicle discovered the 12-guage Remington shotgun belonging to Norton, an AR-15 assault rifle belonging to Stumbo, a large capacity feeding device, more than 300 rounds of ammunition, and a hunting knife, prosecutors said.  Neither man is licensed to carry a firearm in either Massachusetts or Iowa.

Norton is represented by Robert LeRoy and Stumbo by Steve Goldwyn. Both return to court Nov. 19.
