High Bail for Man Charged in Connection with Police-Involved Shooting

Investigation Ongoing in Probe of Dorchester Incident

BOSTON, Dec. 9, 2013—A Dorchester man was held on high bail today at his arraignment on charges that he body-blocked a Boston Police officer pursuing an associate who allegedly opened fire, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHRISTOPHER MURRAIN (D.O.B. 7/9/87) is charged in Dorchester District Court with assault and battery on a public employee. Assistant District Attorney Michael Callahan recommended that he be held on $15,000 cash bail and, if he posts that amount, that he be ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device, abide by a 7:00 pm to 7:00 am curfew, and stay away from the area of the incident. Callahan also asked that Murrain’s bail on two separate, open cases be revoked. Judge Robert Tochka imposed all of Callahan’s recommendations.

Murrain’s alleged associate, DARRYL DOOKHRAN (D.O.B. 1/17/93) of Stoughton, was on probation after incarceration on an earlier firearm conviction when Boston Police approached him just after 1:00 pm on Saturday in the area of Geneva Avenue and Westville Street. Murrain was with him at the time.

Dookhran allegedly fled the approaching officers, who attempted to give chase on foot. At that time, the evidence suggests, Murrain allegedly stepped in and physically blocked one of the officers, giving Dookhran a head start.

The preliminary evidence suggests that Dookhran produced a firearm and fired at pursuing officers, one of whom was hit. That officer was transported to an area hospital with an injury that was not believed to be life-threatening. Dookhran was hit by return fire, suffering a fatal injury.

As with all police-involved fatalities in Suffolk County, Dookhran’s death will be investigated by Conley’s office to determine whether, based on all the facts and circumstances, any criminal charges are warranted. As with all such cases, Conley’s office will then open the investigative file for review by any interested news media.

At the time of the incident, Murrain was charged in two open cases, one charging operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and use of a motor vehicle without authority for a September incident in Dorchester and one charging possession of Class A and Class B substances with intent to distribute for an October incident near the Boston Common.

At his Oct. 10 arraignment in the Boston Municipal Court, prosecutors recommended that Murrain be held on $50,000 cash bail after Boston Police observed him take part in an apparent drug transaction near the corner of Boylston and Tremont streets. When they stopped his car, they recovered 16 bags of heroin, 58 bags of crack cocaine, and a spent shell casing.

Prosecutors asked that his bail on the September case be revoked and that he be held on $50,000 cash bail on the drug case. Boston Municipal Court Judge Raymond Dougan, Jr. released him on his own recognizance.

Murrain will return to court on Jan. 8.
