HIGH BAIL FOR PAIR CHARGED IN BEACON HILL STABBING

A man and woman were held on high bail yesterday following their arrest and arraignment for allegedly stabbing a 51-year-old man during an attempted robbery at the foot of Beacon Hill Friday evening, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KAREEM PITTS (D.O.B. 12/27/89) and DIANA ALLEN (D.O.B. 9/19/91) were arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court yesterday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to rob for the June 25 attack at the corner of Mt. Vernon and River Streets.

Assistant District Attorney Andrius Knasas noted “the seriousness of the facts” before requesting that each defendant be held on $50,000 cash bail; Boston Municipal Court Judge Annette Forde granted that request.

Knasas told the court that the victim walked into the 7-11 convenience store on the corner of Mt. Vernon and Charles Streets at about 8:30 p.m. while a relative waited in a car outside. The victim left the store and started walking towards the corner of Mt. Vernon and River streets when a man – later identified as Pitts – came up from behind him and put him into a headlock. A second suspect – later identified as Allen – approached the victim and allegedly began demanding money from him, while stabbing at him with a knife. The first attacker tried to reach into the victim’s pocket but was unable to get money from the victim, Knasas said.

The victim began shouting for help, prompting his attackers to flee on foot. The waiting relative, who heard his screams, ran to the scene and saw “blood coming through his shirt from his stomach area,” Knasas said. That relative contacted the Boston Police Department and officers assigned to District A-1 responded to the scene. The victim was transported by emergency medical technicians to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

In the aftermath of the stabbing, Knasas said, officers were able to obtain from the store surveillance video showing the two suspects attacking the victim. In the days following the attack, Boston Police located two individuals in the Boston Common who matched witness descriptions of the suspects and images of the assailants depicted in the surveillance footage. After taking both defendants into custody, officers recovered a knife with a purple handle from Allen’s waist area.

Pitts was represented by attorney Lauren Thomas and Allen was represented by attorney Pamela Morris. They are both expected to return to court on July 27.
