HIGH BAIL FOR PAIR CHARGED IN ROXBURY SHOOTINGS

Two Dorchester men were held on high bail today following their arraignments for allegedly shooting a Roxbury resident multiple times on Albion Street last night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

VINCENT DAVIS (D.O.B. 10/16/91) and JESSE DeBURGO (D.O.B. 2/5/91) were both charged in Roxbury District Court today with armed assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm for their alleged roles in the near-fatal shooting on Albion Street last night. DeBurgo, who allegedly drove the getaway vehicle, is additionally charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and registration.

Acting on requests by Suffolk gang prosecutors, Judge Kenneth Fiandaca ordered Davis held on $750,000 cash bail. Prosecutors recommended the same amount for DeBurgo; he was held on $250,000 cash bail and his bail on an unrelated Norfolk County case was revoked, meaning that he will be held even if he posts the quarter-million dollars.

Also at prosecutors’ request, Fiandaca ordered both defendants to have no contact with the victim and to stay away from the neighborhood bordered by Norfolk Street, Columbia Road, Quincy Street, Blue Hill Avenue, and Hampden Street.

“This is the result when police, prosecutors and community members work as one,” Conley said. “A rapid and aggressive response by Boston Police, close cooperation and assistance from Suffolk prosecutors, and outstanding witness participation made it possible to arrest these defendants and convince a judge to set high bail. We can’t undo last night’s awful violence, but we can do everything in our power to hold the offenders accountable.”

Assistant District Attorney Matthew Feeney told the court that the incident – which is believed to stem from a longstanding rivalry between small factions in the Cape Verdean communities of Roxbury and Dorchester – began at about 9:30 when a car pulled up near 10 Albion St. and a passenger got out with a gun. Prosecutors allege that DeBurgo was driving and Davis wielded the firearm.

In the seconds that followed, the 30-year-old victim sustained gunshot wounds to his head, shoulder, and thigh. After overnight surgery, he remains in serious but stable condition.

Boston Police responded within moments and learned of a vehicle that left the scene. That vehicle was tracked to Fuller Street, where both defendants were apprehended – Davis allegedly still with the gun in his hand – shortly before 10:00.

Davis is represented by attorney Richard Doyle and DeBurgo by attorney Paul Carrigan. Both will return to court on Jan. 6.
