A Buzzards Bay man fled a motor vehicle stop in Boston and led police on a high speed chase before being apprehended almost 30 miles away in West Bridgewater, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said at the defendant’s arraignment today.

WILLIAM MONOPOLI (D.O.B. 9/17/84) was arraigned in Dorchester District Court this morning on a litany of charges stemming from Friday afternoon’s chase. Those charges included operating with a suspended license, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, resisting arrest, possession of a Class A substance, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Monopoli was held on $50,000 cash bail on the new charges and without bail on the subject of his initial stop – a warrant out of Suffolk Superior Court for failure to report to probation. He will return to court on June 7 on the new charges.

Prosecutors say Boston Police stopped Monopoli’s 1998 Ford Ranger shortly before 2:00 Friday afternoon. Monopoli allegedly fled that stop, speeding southbound on Route 93 at a high rate of speed.

An off-duty State trooper traveling home in his marked cruiser spotted Monopoli’s vehicle after hearing a State Police dispatch broadcast. The trooper activated his lights and sirens in an attempt to pull Monopoli over. Monopoli allegedly responded by driving in an increasingly aggressive manner, travelling at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

Monopoli allegedly struck an occupied pickup truck near Milton Square after suddenly cutting left out of the right hand lane. The operator of that vehicle was not physically injured. Monopoli continued south on Route 24 at ever-increasing speeds. During this time, Monopoli allegedly nearly struck one trooper outside his vehicle and tried to ram the off-duty trooper’s car as that trooper tried to slow him down after passing him.

Monopoli then exited to Route 106 in West Bridgewater, where he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Monopoli then jumped from the vehicle and climbed a fence into a parking lot. The off-duty trooper continued his pursuit, blocking Monopoli in as a State Police K-9 unit held him in place.

Monopoli’s car was seized and an inventory conducted. Among the items recovered was a pill bottle containing 12 pills of two different types and multiple broken pills. Monopoli was represented today by attorney Regina Hughes.
