High Bail in Chelsea Assault

BOSTON, June 16, 2014— A Chelsea man was ordered held on high bail after his arraignment today on charges he beat a woman with a metal pipe, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MANUEL MARROQUIN (D.O.B. 10/5/87) was arraigned today in Chelsea District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and aggravated assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.  Assistant District Attorney David Bradley of the DA’s Senior Trial Unit requested that bail for Marroquin be set in the amount of $250,000.  Judge Michael Nestor imposed $100,000 bail.

Chelsea Police were called to the area of 276 Chestnut St shortly after 4:30 a.m. Sunday after a passerby discovered the critically injured 29-year-old Chelsea woman outside.  The woman was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Police discovered what was believed to be blood on the front steps of a nearby building at 270 Chestnut St.  As police investigated, a resident of the building later identified as Marroquin walked out of the front door and was stopped by officers in order to prevent him from walking through the blood.

Marroquin allegedly made statements to police indicating that he had assaulted the victim.  During a post-Miranda interview, he allegedly made comments that he had met the victim that night and the two went to Marroquin’s apartment.  At some point, he noticed his laptop was missing and found it inside the victim’s purse.  Marroquin allegedly told police that he picked up a metal pipe and struck the victim in the head several times before carrying her outside and leaving her near another home, prosecutors said.

What appeared to be dried blood was observed on Marroquin, prosecutors said.

Marroquin was represented by attorney John Haggerty.  He will return to court July 16.
