High Bail in Randolph Man’s Second Gun Arrest

A Randolph man was held on high bail today following his second gun arrest, which came as Boston Police were investigating a possible break-in on Park View Street in Roxbury early this morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ANTOINE LEWIS (D.O.B. 11/19/89) was arraigned in Roxbury District Court this morning on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm. Lewis was additionally charged with being a Level I armed career criminal because of a prior gun conviction for which he served two and a half years behind bars.

Assistant District Attorney SuLynn Walton recommended that Lewis be held on $150,000 cash bail and that his open bail on an unrelated malicious destruction of property case be revoked. Judge Mark Hart Summerville set bail at $50,000 on the gun case and declined to make a revocation order.

Boston Police responding to a breaking and entering call shortly after 1:00 a.m. were on the lookout for a dark, heavyset figure heading toward Seaver Street when they observed Lewis and two other individuals. The three were walking on Seaver Street from the direction of Park View Street. Lewis was wearing a black baggy jacket.

Based on their training and experience, the officers recognized Lewis’ jacket to have what appeared to be a heavy object in its right pocket. When they exited their vehicle to approach the trio, Lewis allegedly stepped back and away from them while turning the right side of his body away from them. Lewis allegedly refused to cooperate with a pat frisk by dropping and stiffening his right arm against his side and crouching away from the officer.

A brief struggle ensued when Lewis allegedly tried to run from the officers. In the course of that struggle, Lewis allegedly tried to reach for the right side of his body while officers tried to keep his hand away from what they feared was a weapon. Once he was handcuffed and a pat frisk was performed, the officers retrieved a Norinco Model 213 9mm semiautomatic handgun from his right jacket pocket.

The handgun was loaded with one round in the magazine and one in the chamber. Its hammer was cocked and ready to fire.

“Make no mistake, those officers risked their lives during this arrest,” Conley said. “Thanks to their sharp eyes, quick wits, and calm during the struggle, no one was hurt and a potential shooting – or worse – was averted.”

The person who reported the break-in was unable to identify anyone in Lewis’ party, and his associates were released. Lewis was taken into custody and held pending his arraignment this morning.
