Hit-and-Run Suspect Faces Drug Charges After Search Warrant Turns Up Marijuana Plants

A motor vehicle homicide suspect was back in court today after police found a marijuana grow room while executing a search warrant at his Roslindale home, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

COLIN RATIU (D.O.B. 11/27/87) and his wife, SADE HOLLIDAY (D.O.B. 2/1/86), were arraigned this morning in West Roxbury District Court on charges of cultivating marijuana and possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute.

Assistant District Attorney David Bradley of Conley’s Major Felony Bureau recommended that Ratiu be held on $5,000 cash bail and have his open bail revoked; he also recommended that Holliday’s bail be set at $500. West Roxbury District Court Judge Ernest Sarason set Ratiu’s bail at $500 and released Holliday on her own recognizance.

This morning’s proceedings come just a day after Ratiu was arraigned in a different courthouse for allegedly driving into a 23-year-old scooter operator, killing him, and fleeing the scene. Bradley had recommended $25,000 cash bail for that offense; Ratiu was released on $7,500.

Ratiu was arrested Friday for Andrew Prior’s Nov. 14 death after Boston Police detectives obtained information in a tip that led them to Ratiu’s home. A Hyndai Santa Fe sport-utility vehicle was found near the residence: it matched the description of the vehicle in the hit-and-run, it had damage to its front end and windshield, and both airbags had been deployed.

Yesterday evening, as Boston Police were preparing to execute a search warrant on Ratiu’s Washington Street home in connection with that pending case, detectives encountered Ratiu and Holliday leaving the premises. The detectives informed the pair that they were present to execute a search warrant.

Inside the residence, detectives found evidence of a marijuana grow room that included four large potted marijuana plants, a grow lamp with a spare bulb, a temperature and humidity sensor, a timer, and a ledger. Ratiu allegedly told detectives that the marijuana plants were tomato plants.

Ratiu and Holliday will return to West Roxbury District Court on March 14 and Roxbury District Court, where he is charged with motor vehicle homicide, on March 11.
