Interagency Partnership Identifies Suspect in Eastie Robbery

BOSTON, Sept. 10, 2013—Cooperation among Boston Police, Chelsea Police and probation officers led to the rapid identification of a suspect in a Sept. 2 robbery in East Boston, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DARRYL McCLURE (D.O.B. 8/16/69) of Chelsea was arraigned yesterday in the East Boston Division of the Boston Municipal Court on one count of armed robbery. Assistant District Attorney Janine D’Amico recommended that he be held on $10,000 cash bail and that his open bail in several pending drug cases be revoked. Judge Kenneth Fiandaca granted both requests.

D’Amico told the court that Boston Police responded to the Walgreens in Central Square just before noon last Monday for a report of an armed robbery in progress. On arrival, they spoke with a clerk who told them a man had presented her with a note reading “This is a US robbery” and told her to give her all the money in her register. The man had his right hand in his sweatshirt pocket as if holding a gun. The clerk complied with the assailant’s demands and he fled the scene on a bicycle.

Despite a detailed description and a search of the area, officers were unable to locate the suspect in the aftermath of the incident. Detectives retrieved store surveillance footage, however, and set about trying to identify the suspect in the robbery it depicted.

After circulating images from that footage to area law enforcement agencies, detectives assigned to the case heard from other Boston Police officers, a Chelsea Police officer, and a probation officer assigned to East Boston court, all of whom identified the suspect as McClure from prior encounters. As a result, Boston Police obtained a warrant for McClure’s arrest and took him into custody yesterday.

At the time of the incident, McClure was free on bail in cases alleging distribution of counterfeit drugs and possession of Class A, Class B, and Class E substances.

McClure was represented by the Committee for Public Counsel Services. He will return to court on Oct. 4.
