Investigators Seeking ID for Man Found Dead in River

BOSTON, April 28, 2016—State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man found deceased in the waters of the Charles River last month.

Investigators have exhausted the traditional methods of identifying the individual, whose body was spotted floating along the Esplanade on March 10. The body is described as that of a pale-skinned, white male approximately 60 years in age, about 5’8” tall, and about 200 lbs. He was bald except for white hair on the back and sides of his head, with white facial hair.

The man had a backpack with items inside, but did not have any identification or personal papers to establish his identity. He was wearing a dark-colored Carhartt stocking cap, light-colored pants, a blue sweater, and a gray hooded Abercrombie & Fitch sweatshirt with faded yellow lettering.

A passerby spotted the man floating face down in the Charles River against the Arthur Fielder Dock near the Hatch Memorial Shell just after 12:30 pm on March 10. Because the river and adjacent land are State property, the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit responded along with Troop H detectives, the Crime Services Section, and Marine Section. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did not reveal signs of violent trauma to the man’s body.

Anyone who may be able to shed light on the man’s identity – or even locations he may have frequented – is asked to contact the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817.
