JP Man Accused of Assaulting Child at Hospital

BOSTON, Nov. 10, 2014—A Jamaica Plain man was arraigned today for allegedly touching an 8-year-old child improperly at a Boston hospital yesterday, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JUAN P. CORTES (D.O.B. 5/30/89) was arraigned on one count of indecent assault and battery on a child for the incident at Boston University Medical Center. Assistant District Attorney AlexaRae Wright recommended that he be held on $10,000 cash bail and, if he posts that amount, that he be ordered to abide by a curfew, wear a GPS monitor, and stay away from all children under 16, including the victim.

Boston Municipal Court Judge Michael Coyne imposed $500 cash bail and all the requested conditions of release.

Boston Police responded to the scene at about 6:00 yesterday evening after being notified by BUMC Police about an alleged sexual assault at the hospital earlier that afternoon. After speaking with witnesses at the scene, including BUMC Police officers who had reviewed footage from hospital surveillance cameras, Cortes was taken into custody.

Cortes was placed on administrative leave from his position with the Boston Public Schools today after Boston Police notified them of the arrest. In order to protect the victim’s identity, authorities are not disclosing the relationship between Cortes and the child.

Cortes is represented by attorney David Fitzgerald.  He will return to court on Nov. 26.
