Judge Order Evaluation For Suspect in Deliveryman’s Robbery

The suspect in a robbery last month that targeted a pizza deliveryman was sent for a mental health evaluation at his arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSE MARTINEZ (D.O.B. 4/9/91) of Dorchester was arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and assault with a dangerous weapon. After a court clinician found Martinez not competent to assist in his own defense, Judge Michael Coyne ordered the defendant to undergo a 20-day evaluation at Taunton State Hospital.

Martinez is accused of a Dec. 10 robbery targeting a delivery driver from Stalex Pizza. When the driver arrived at the front door of 31 Capen St., Martinez allegedly pulled a gun and demanded “whatever you have.”

“Let’s talk,” the driver said.

“I don’t want to talk,” Martinez allegedly said, racking the slide on a silver-colored semiautomatic handgun. The driver at that point handed over a pizza and two orders of chicken wings.

The victim notified Boston Police, who were unable to locate the assailant. On Tuesday, however, the victim flagged down two more Boston Police officers and said he’d seen the man who robbed him. With a co-worker, he followed that suspect to a Norfolk Street address that later proved to be Martinez’ residence.

Based on this new information, Boston Police assembled a photo array that contained Martinez’ photo. The victim positively identified Martinez and Boston Police later took him into custody.

On Nov. 1, 2007, a Dorchester youth shot and killed the owner of Stalex Pizza during a failed robbery. GARY JOHNSON (D.O.B. 10/28/89) is currently serving a life term without the possibility of parole for shooting 47-year-old Mumin Manavoglu to death in that incident.

Expected to face trial later this year are ALEXANDER GALLETT (D.O.B. 4/28/92) of Hyde Park; his girlfriend, YAMILEY MATHURIN (D.O.B. 2/25/93) of Mattapan, and MICHEL ST. JEAN (D.O.B. 8/3/90) of Hyde Park, all charged with first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of 58-year-old Richel Nova. The trio allegedly ambushed and stabbed him to death when he delivered their pizza order at a vacant Hyde Park home in 2010.

DEONTE P. CURRY (D.O.B. 5/6/91) of Everett is currently held on $50,000 cash bail after allegedly robbing two deliverymen at gunpoint last month after they were called to the area of 110 Monsignor Lydon Way.

Martinez is represented by attorney Hodges Brown, Jr. He will return to court on Jan. 25.
