Juvenile, 16, Held in Stabbing Death of 17-Year-Old

BOSTON, Oct. 23, 2015—A 16-year-old Dorchester youth was held without bail today on a murder charge stemming from the fatal stabbing of Mason Raymond at Jackson Square station, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RONALDO CEPEDA (D.O.B. 3/3/99) was arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court for the incident yesterday afternoon. Although he is a juvenile, Massachusetts law mandates that all murder defendants aged 14 or older are charged as adults.

Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis of the DA’s Homicide Unit told Judge Paul McManus that Cepeda got off a bus and sat down on a bench outside the MBTA station’s turnstiles at about 3:20 yesterday afternoon. A short time later, Raymond entered through a nearby door.

The two, who knew each other, spoke briefly but the words soon escalated to fisticuffs. They separated for a moment, during which Cepeda allegedly produced a knife but held it behind him so Mason could not see it. When they engaged again, Cepeda stabbed Mason.

The 17-year-old Hyde Park victim sustained a single stab wound to the chest, penetrating his heart. He was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he died of his injuries at about 4:30 this morning.

Boston Police homicide detectives, assisted by MBTA Transit Police and footage from public safety cameras at the station, obtained a lead on the suspect’s identity early in the investigation. He was arrested at his home this morning, given his Miranda rights, and interviewed in the presence of an adult family member. He allegedly made incriminating statements in the course of that interview.

Cepeda is represented by attorney Veronica White. He will return to court on Nov. 16.
