MAN CHARGED WITH KEEPING CRACK, GUN IN BASEMENT SAFE

An alleged drug trafficker was charged yesterday with secreting more than 80 grams of crack cocaine and an unregistered .357 Magnum in a basement safe, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

GARY ALAN LEWIS, JR. a.k.a. DERRICK LEWIS (D.O.B. 7/20/79) was arraigned yesterday in West Roxbury District Court on charges of trafficking in a Class B substance in a school zone, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a as a second offense, possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Meade requested that Lewis be held on $75,000 cash bail. District Court Judge Lawrence E. McCormick set bail at $7,000 and ordered Lewis to report to the Probation Department once a week while his case is pending. McCormick further ordered that Lewis refrain from using drugs or alcohol and that he submit to random drug screens.

Meade told the court that Boston Police officers executed a search warrant on Lewis’ home and vehicle early Monday afternoon. In post-Miranda statements to police, Lewis allegedly said that there was nothing in his home before adding that there “might be something downstairs.”

Lewis then allegedly admitted to having drugs and a gun in a safe in the basement. He then provided officers with the numerical combination to the safe. Inside, officers found a Dan Wesson Arms .357 SuperMag revolver, a black glove containing six .357 bullets, a plastic bag containing in excess of 80 grams of crack cocaine, a black digital scale, one box of plastic sandwich bags, $2,725 in cash, and personal papers in the defendant’s name.

Lewis’ home is within 1,000 feet of the James J. Chittick Elementary School. He was previously convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm in 1999.

Lewis is expected to return to court on Oct. 1. He is represented by attorney Domenic Bozzotto.
