MAN IDENTIFIED THROUGH MEDIA COVERAGE OF TATTOO

The man whose body was recovered from the Mystic River last week has been identified thanks to media coverage of his distinctive tattoo, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

The remains were those of a 21-year-old Chelsea man. Authorities are not releasing his identity.

Members of the State Police Marine Section providing security for a liquefied natural gas tanker in the Mystic River on June 11 observed the body near the Boston Autoport in Charlestown. As with all death investigations on state waterways within the City of Boston, State Police detectives assigned to Conley’s office undertook efforts to identify him and determine whether criminal charges were warranted.

An autopsy found no signs of trauma or foul play, but investigators could not determine who he was. In addition to circulating descriptions of his build and clothing, investigators also released a photograph of a distinctive tattoo inked upon his right shoulder; that tattoo depicted a basketball surrounded by flames.

Members of the man’s family saw the tattoo in media reports, recognized it, and contacted State Police. His identity was confirmed today.

“We’d like to thank all those media outlets who broadcast the image,” Conley said. “It allowed the young man a dignified burial under his true name.”
