MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY STOLE SCHOOL BUS DUE BACK IN COURT TOMORROW

A Chelsea man who allegedly stole a city school bus last night will return to court following his arraignment today because the substance abuse center to which he was sent would not admit him.

RENE LOPEZ, 23, was arraigned in Chelsea District Court today on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop for police, malicious destruction of property, and other offenses. Judge James LaMothe ordered him held without bail while undergoing evaluation at the Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center, setting that bail without prejudice and further ordering that Lopez return to court on June 5.

A short time after arraignment, officials notified the court that the MASAC would not admit Lopez because of a gunshot wound he sustained following a chase that led Chelsea Police from that city into Everett. Preliminary evidence suggests that Lopez was shot while driving into a marked and occupied Chelsea Police cruiser; the facts and circumstances of that shooting remain under investigation by Chelsea and State Police.

In light of that notification, LaMothe ordered Lopez to return to court tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with attorney Joanna Sandman. Orders of bail and custody will be addressed at that time.
