Manslaughter Charge in Fatal Mass Ave Stabbing

A Randolph man has been charged with manslaughter for the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Andrew Wyman during an altercation on Massachusetts Avenue this spring, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

DARRELL MITCHELL (D.O.B. 3/13/87) was indicted for Wyman’s slaying on Aug. 12 and arraigned this morning in Suffolk Superior Court. Acting on a request by Assistant District Attorney Dana Pierce of Conley’s Senior Trial Unit, Clerk Magistrate Connie Wong kept in place the $250,000 cash bail imposed at Mitchell’s district court arraignment on a murder charge.

Pierce told the court that Wyman and a female friend were walking along Massachusetts Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. on May 15 when the woman, who was several yards ahead of him, had a verbal altercation with Mitchell, who was behind the wheel of his girlfriend’s white 1992 Dodge Dynasty. The woman told Wyman about this verbal exchange.

“The victim observed the white car stopped at a red light, ran to the car, and punched and kicked it,” Pierce said. “The operator pulled away when the light turned green, made a U-turn on Mass Ave, and stopped. The victim approached the white car again and was observed to throw a punch into the driver’s side window. The operator was seen to make an awkward punching or stabbing motion out of the window that connected with the victim’s chest area.”

Wyman staggered away from the car and collapsed to the ground with a fatal stab wound to his chest. He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he died of his injuries later that morning.

The operator of the car – later identified as Mitchell – drove away from the scene, heading north. The car was later recovered in the area of 255 Massachusetts Ave. with reddish-brown stains believed to be blood on the driver’s side door.

Boston Police homicide detectives later made contact with Mitchell by telephone. When told that Wyman had died, Pierce said, he began to cry and said that he “panicked and took off” after the incident. He later surrendered to authorities and was arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court on May 20.

Jennifer Sears is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Mitchell is represented by attorney Eduardo Masferrer. The case will return to court on Oct. 13.
