Meth Suspect Received Drug Shipment at JP School, Prosecutors Say

BOSTON, May 22, 2013—A Dorchester man who works at a Jamaica Plain school was held on $10,000 cash bail today on methamphetamine trafficking charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

STEPHEN W. DORAN (D.O.B. 3/26/56) was arraigned today in West Roxbury District Court following his arrest yesterday by State Police. Assistant District Attorney Rakhi Lahiri recommended $500,000 bail; Judge Michael Coyne imposed the lower amount but ordered Doran to wear a GPS device and remain on home confinement except for medical appointments if he posts that amount.

State Police conducting an ongoing investigation yesterday obtained a warrant to search a US Postal Service Express Mail package sent to Doran but bearing the address of the Match Charter Middle School where he is employed as a tutor.

Just after 12:30 yesterday afternoon, State Police stopped Doran as he left the school in his vehicle and opened the package, recovering two heat-sealed baggies containing 480 grams of a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine. Doran was placed under arrest, and because the substance was sent to the school he was additionally charged with violating the state’s drug laws in a school zone.

Based on the seizure of such a large quantity of the highly addictive stimulant, State Police obtained another warrant to search Doran’s Dix Street residence. There, they recovered an additional 38 grams of the substance and about $10,000 in cash, a digital scale, and other items consistent with drug distribution. Based on this evidence, Doran will be charged with a second count of methamphetamine trafficking in Dorchester District Court. His arraignment there has not yet been scheduled.

Prosecutors estimate the total street value of the seized drugs at about $50,000.

Doran was represented by attorneys Vincent A. Murray, Jr., and Joseph D. Eisenstadt. He will return to West Roxbury court on June 24.
