MOTHER WHO KILLED CHILDREN NOW FACES POSSIBLE COMMITMENT

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found that a Roslindale woman killed her two children but suffered from a mental disease or defect at the time she committed the act.

Jurors found ANGELA VASQUEZ (D.O.B. 3/15/76) not guilty of two counts of murder for lack of criminal responsibility. Prosecutors had argued that Vasquez had the mental capacity to recognize the wrongfulness of her actions when she caused the deaths of 10-year-old Dennis Burgos, Jr., and 13-year-old Yasmine Burgos on or about July 29, 2007.

Though a medical examiner ruled the children’s deaths to be homicides, pathologists were unable to make an exact determination as to cause of death in part because their remains were in advanced stages of decomposition. Prosecution evidence and testimony did prove, however, that Vasquez killed the children.

Judge Patrick Brady remanded Vasquez to the South Bay House of Correction, where she will spend the night. Tomorrow, he will order her to undergo a 40-day mental health evaluation that could lead to her involuntary commitment. That hearing will take place in courtroom 815 at 10:30 a.m.

Vasquez was represented by attorneys Janice Bassil and Hank Brennan.
