Multiple Boston-Area Crashes, Two Fatal, Under Investigation

State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating three unrelated overnight crashes in Boston and Revere that left two people dead and three injured.

Members of the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit – who have jurisdiction over death investigations in Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop, along with State roadways within the City of Boston – responded to the area of 270 Broadway in Revere for a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle at about 11:00 p.m.

Evidence and witness statements indicate that a 45-year-old Lynn man was operating a green Ford Explorer when he struck a 51-year-old Revere man, causing life-threatening injuries; he was transported first to Whidden Memorial Hospital and then to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver was neither intoxicated nor driving at excessive speed at the time of the collision; he remained at the scene, passed field sobriety tests conducted by Revere Police, and gave a complete statement to State Police. He has not been charged at this time.

The Suffolk SPDU also responded to the Riverway at Brookline Avenue just after 1:00 this morning for a roll-over crash involving a black BMW operated by ROBINSON AVENDANO (D.O.B. 11/7/72) of Dedham.

Avendano and a back-seat passenger were transported to Beth Israel Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. A front-seat passenger, identified as a 26-year-old Dorchester woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered fatal injuries during the crash. Members of the Boston Fire Department had to extricate her remains from the wreckage. The preliminary investigation suggests that the three occupants had been drinking and that Avendano lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree before rolling. Avendano is currently charged with operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle; additional charges are expected in the near future.

At about 5:00 this morning, Suffolk SPDU troopers were called to a third crash site, this one on Route 93 northbound near Freeport Street in Dorchester. A grey Honda Civic was overturned in the left travel lane. The operator, EDISON CORREA (D.O.B. 4/9/88) of Everett, was suffering from severe head trauma and was not responsive. He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition and is expected to survive. The preliminary investigation suggests that Correa was travelling at a high rate of speed, sideswiped a second vehicle, crashed into a Jersey barrier, and rolled over. Assuming Correa’s condition does not worsen, State Police assigned to the South Boston Barracks will lead the investigation and likely charge Correa.
