NJ Man Stashed Cocaine in Shoes, Prosecutors Say

A New Jersey man was held on high bail today after Massachusetts State Police arrested him at Logan Airport with more than $200,000 worth of cocaine tucked inside shoes in his checked baggage, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CARLOS LANNS (D.O.B. 2/20/87) was arraigned today on a single count of trafficking in more than 200 grams of a Class B substance – specifically, 2.17 kilograms of cocaine, or more than 10 times the largest amount recognized under Massachusetts’ trafficking statute.

Assistant District Attorney Erik Bennett recommended that Lanns be held on $750,000 cash bail and be ordered to wear a GPS tracking device and surrender his passport if he posts that amount. East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., set bail at $300,000 and imposed the recommended conditions of release.

State Police assigned to the Logan Airport Barracks arrested Lanns at the Logan Customs hall shortly after he disembarked from a JetBlue flight from Santo Domingo at about 6:10 yesterday evening. The arrest followed communications between State Police and US Customs and Border Protection. Authorities are not revealing the detection techniques used in this case so as not to compromise ongoing interdiction efforts.
The cocaine was recovered in eight plastic-wrapped bundles secreted within four pairs of shoes inside a bag Lanns had checked as luggage. It was weighed and field testing gave a positive result, indicating it was cocaine.

Lanns was represented today by attorney Erica Colombo. He will return to court on October 5.
