No Bail For Alleged Gunman in May Murder

The Mattapan man charged with murdering 22-year-old Cordell McAfee was held without bail today, three days after local, state, and federal authorities found him hiding beneath a bed in Rhode Island, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

LAVONRENCE PERKINS (D.O.B. 3/26/90) was arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. The charges stem from McAfee’s shooting death in Dorchester last year.

First Assistant District Attorney Josh Wall told District Court Judge Kenneth Desmond that McAfee was sitting on a relative’s Roseland Street porch at about 6:30 p.m. when two gunmen dressed in cream-colored, hooded sweatshirts approached on foot and began firing at him.

The two gunmen then ran across Dorchester Avenue in the direction of 10 St. Mark’s Rd. and into the apartment of ADAM SIMKINS (D.O.B. 10/10/88), who lived at that address. Boston Police quickly surrounded the building and five occupants surrendered. Both Perkins and Simkins were among those five.

During the execution of a search warrant on Simkins’ apartment, Boston Police recovered two handguns that were later linked ballistically to the weapons used to kill McAfee. Also recovered were two cream-colored sweatshirts and a large quantity of cocaine.

The investigation progressed carefully and methodically until December, authorities said, when they had developed sufficient evidence to charge Perkins with murder, Simkins with being an accessory after the fact to murder, and both men with unlawful firearms possession. Simkins is additionally charged with trafficking in cocaine.

Simkins was arraigned on his charges last month. He remains behind bars on $500,000 cash bail and is represented by attorney Harold Hakala. The search for Perkins ultimately led to Cranston, where he was arrested by Boston Police, Rhode Island State Police, and US Marshals while cowering beneath a bed.

Perkins is represented by attorney Peter Krupp. He will return to court on Feb. 17.
