NO BAIL FOR DORCHESTER MAN CHARGED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMICIDE

A Suffolk Superior Court Clerk Magistrate today ordered a Dorchester man to be held without bail following his arraignment for the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old man who was romantically involved with his former girlfriend, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

GREGORIO “MIKEY” LOPEZ (D.O.B. 9/3/90) was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm for the March 11 shooting of Shoughan Morgan following an argument between the two men at the woman’s residence.

Assistant District Attorney David Fredette told the court that on the night of March 10 into the early morning hours of the next day, the defendant went to see his former girlfriend at her Mozart Street residence. After being let into the apartment by a roommate, Fredette said, Lopez walked into the woman’s bedroom, where he found Morgan.

The two men became engaged in a verbal altercation, before moving the discussion out to the hallway, where they spoke for a period of time, Fredette said.

Witnesses allegedly heard Lopez say that he “had to go get something,” before leaving the apartment through a back door.

“He later called someone and asked if the victim was still there,” Fredette said. Lopez then walked in through the back door and proceeded to the front door, where he found the victim and the woman talking. Evidence suggests that the defendant returned to the apartment carrying a shotgun.

“He made a derogatory statement before shooting the victim once,” he said. Fredette told the court that there was evidence that Lopez may have tried to shoot Morgan a second time, but that the firearm jammed. Morgan suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Immediately following the shooting, Lopez left the apartment. Witnesses who saw him coming into the apartment and leaving the apartment were able to positively identify him as the shooter, Fredette said. Authorities sought a warrant for Lopez’s arrest within hours of the shooting. Lopez surrendered himself to authorities on March 23.

Lopez is represented by attorney Matthew Kamholtz and is expected to return to court on June 23.
