NO BAIL FOR DORCHESTER MAN CHARGED WITH YMCA MURDER

The Dorchester man accused of gunning down 19-year-old Aaron Brown at a YMCA dance last summer was held without bail at prosecutors’ request following his arraignment for the slain teen’s murder, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SHERMAN BADGETT (D.O.B. 2/23/91) is charged with first-degree murder for Brown’s fatal shooting, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for shooting and injuring another youth, and unlawful possession of the firearm he allegedly used on those victims at 776 Washington St. on the night of Aug. 29, 2009.

“We as a community need to denounce the person who brings a loaded gun to a teenage dance party,” Conley said. “We need to denounce the code of conduct that makes it acceptable to anyone anywhere.”

Also arraigned today was TYREE DRAUGHN (D.O.B. 10/31/91) of Roxbury, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon for an incident that preceded Brown’s homicide and as an accessory after the fact to assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly driving Badgett from the scene in the moments after the shooting.

Assistant District Attorney Daniel Mulhern, chief of Conley’s Gang Unit, recommended that Draughn be held on $100,000 cash bail; Suffolk Superior Court Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson set bail at $25,000. Wilson also ordered both men to have no contact with the victims’ families.

Mulhern told the court that an altercation broke out inside the gymnasium shortly after 11:30 p.m between a group containing Badgett and Draughn and a group containing Brown and the surviving victim.

“That altercation came to a head when Mr. Draughn pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the other group,” Mulhern said.

The YMCA staff turned on the lights and ordered the groups out of the building.

“The group with Mr. Badgett and Mr. Draughn left through the rear door, followed by the other group,” Mulhern said.

It was then that Badgett allegedly pulled a firearm and fired three shots. One shot hit the wall and one shot grazed the surviving victim in the ear, Mulhern said.

“The third shot struck Mr. Brown,” Mulhern said. “Mr. Brown walked back into the gymnasium and succumbed to his injuries.”

Badgett and Draughn fled the scene of the shooting in a car driven by Vaughn, Mulhern said. The two drove to Cedar Street in Mattapan where they parked the car.

As the result of what Mulhern called “a rigorous investigation,” over the last nine months, Brown and Draughn were identified as suspects, Mulhern told the court.

Brown was arrested by Boston Police on April 5 after investigators developed sufficient evidence in the grand jury to charge him with murder. Draughn was summonsed to court following his indictment.

Badgett was represented by attorney Michael Bourbeau and will return to court on July 8. Draughn is represented by attorney Christopher Belezos and will return to court on June 21 for a bail hearing. Jessica Sheehan is the district attorney’s victim-witness advocate assigned to the case.
