No Bail For Fugitive From Attempted Murder Charge

A man wanted for attempted murder in Puerto Rico was apprehended in Chelsea this week and held without bail at his arraignment as a fugitive from justice, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Acting on information developed during a lengthy investigation, members of the US Marshal’s Service, State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and Chelsea Police Department arrested MICHAEL ROLDAN-COTTO (D.O.B. 4/26/90) yesterday afternoon on a warrant out of San Juan.

At the request of Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Brandt, Chelsea District Court Judge Benjamin Barnes yesterday ordered Roldan-Cotto held without bail. Brandt told the court that authorities in Puerto Rico would rendite Roldan-Cotto back to face charges there.

“A dangerous felon is off the street thanks to interagency partnership,” Conley said. “Local, state, and federal authorities are working day and night to identify, locate, and apprehend violent fugitives like this one.”

Roldan-Cotto was wanted for allegedly shooting a man multiple times in Cayey, Puerto Rico, on May 2, 2010.

The multiagency team had set up surveillance in the area of Cross Street and Broadway in Chelsea yesterday when they observed Roldan-Cotto approaching 11 Cross St. at about 2:15. Police moved in, advised him of the warrant, and took him into custody.

Roldan-Cotto will return to court on March 25 with attorney Jane Ross.
