No Bail in Chelsea Man’s Thanksgiving Day Slaying

A suspect in the Thanksgiving Day slaying of 30-year-old Carlos Ramirez was held without bail today following his arraignment in connection with the Chelsea man’s stabbing death, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

DENNIS BOWEN (D.O.B. 9/8/89) was charged today with one count of murder for Ramirez’ death in the area of 759 Broadway, where Bowen lives. Acting on a request by Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis, Judge Benjamin Barnes ordered Bowen held without bail.

Galatis told the court that Chelsea Police responded at about 11:00 a.m. to a 911 call for a person stabbed in the area of 759 Broadway. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Ramirez suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed by ambulance to the Whidden Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries a short time later.

Witnesses told investigators that they had heard two men arguing and swearing at each other from inside the common hallway of either 757 or 759 Broadway. Witnesses also said they’d seen two men fighting as they exited the apartment building and went out to the sidewalk.

While out on the sidewalk, a third party intervened in an attempt to break up the fight. When Ramirez fell to the ground, Galatis said, Bowen got on top of him and struck him several times. He then allegedly stood up, produced a knife, and stabbed him. Following the stabbing, Bowen allegedly fled the scene on foot.

An autopsy found the cause of Ramirez’ death to be a stab wound to the torso, which caused fatal injuries to his lung and heart.

Suffolk prosecutors approved a warrant for Bowen’s arrest the next day in the course of a round-the-clock investigation by State and Chelsea police. Bowen surrendered on Nov. 27. As he was being booked, officers observed that Bowen had a single cut on the palm of one hand and no other injuries.

Bowen is represented by attorney John Tardif. He is expected to return to court on Jan. 7, 2011.
