No Bail in Fatal Convenience Store Shooting

BOSTON, July 18, 2012—The Dorchester man accused of gunning down 25-year-old Jason Withers in Grove Hall earlier this year was ordered held without bail at his arraignment this afternoon in Roxbury District Court, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis told Judge David Weingarten that RAMON DINGLE-SMITH (D.O.B. 6/21/92) drove up to a now-closed all-night convenience store at 655 Warren St. at about 4:15 a.m., got out of his vehicle, and walked inside the shop. After stopping briefly at the cash register, Galatis said, he left the store.

About 10 minutes later, the prosecutor said, Dingle-Smith walked in again, took a few steps into the store, and opened fire on Withers, who was present inside. Withers was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Dingle-Smith allegedly ran from the store on foot and was picked up in the same vehicle he’d previously been driving. That vehicle left the scene, Galatis said.

Galatis said Dingle-Smith was captured on video surveillance from cameras in multiple locations and that cell tower records show him to be “in pertinent locations at pertinent times.”

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, prosecutors said.

Dingle-Smith was represented by attorney Willie Davis. He will return to court on Aug. 17.
