No Bail in Hartford Street Homicide

BOSTON, May 7, 2018—A Brighton man was held without bail at his arraignment on a murder charge stemming from the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Dwayne Thomas, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DERRELL RUSSELL, 29, was charged with the shooting that claimed Thomas’ life on Hartford Street in Dorchester late last month. He was arrested late Friday by Boston Police on a warrant issued earlier that day.

Assistant District Attorney Catherine Ham of the DA’s Homicide Unit told the court that people in the area of the shooting heard gunshots in the early morning hours of April 28 and saw a black Infinity SUV leaving the area where Thomas was found mortally wounded.

Video cameras in the area captured black SUV, first on nearby Howard Street and then travelling down Hartford Street just before the shooting. Additional cameras picked up the same vehicle at various locations in Dorchester after the shooting and at the Brighton home where he currently resides at about 4:50 am.

Prosecutors say details specific to this vehicle – including an EZ Pass transponder, air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror, and distinctive hub caps – are consistent with the surveillance images.

Russell was represented today by attorney Timothy Bradl. He will return to court on June 8.
