Officer’s Rapid Response Nets Five Suspects in Two Downtown Thefts

BOSTON, Sept. 12, 2013—Five men were arraigned earlier this week after a Boston Police officer responded to one robbery and spotted them allegedly tossing the proceeds from another, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

HASSAN HUSSEIN (D.O.B. 1/1/88) of Cambridge, YAYHE ISSACK (D.O.B. 1/1/86) of Hyde Park, ABDULLAHI JAMA (D.O.B. 1/1/95) of Roxbury, AHMED JAMA (D.O.B. 5/24/92) of Roxbury, and ADNAN TAHLIL (D.O.B. 4/5/94) of Roxbury were each arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court on two dockets – one charging the defendants with unarmed robbery of one victim, the other charging them with receiving stolen property for items stolen from a second victim.

Judge Mark Hart Summerville set bail for each defendant in the amount of $10,000.  He denied requests by Assistant District Attorney George Barker to revoke bail in open matters for Hussein, charged with breaking and entering, and Abdullahi Jama, charged with receiving stolen property.

According to prosecutors, Boston Police were called to the area of Stuart and Washington streets at approximately 3:00 Sunday morning when a 21-year-old man visiting from out of the country reported he had been robbed of U.S. currency, euros, and his cell phone by a group of five men.  The victim was able to provide police with a description of the suspects and their direction of flight.

An officer searching for the suspects came across a group of men matching the description provided as they walked on Harrison Avenue.  After spotting his marked cruiser, the suspects began to toss wallets and cell phones from their pockets, prosecutors said.  All of the men were stopped by police.

Among the items that were found on the ground were two wallets and an iPhone. One wallet contained identification and credit cards in the victim’s name, and the iPhone rang when officers called the victim’s number.  Police also recovered $9 in U.S. currency and $60 in Euros in Abdullahi Jama’s front pocket, according to prosecutors. The victim was brought to the area of Harrison Avenue and identified the suspects with absolutely certainty as the men who had robbed him, prosecutors said.  The defendants were also positively identified by an independent witness to the robbery.

One of the defendants was also carrying a second iPhone with information on it that matched credit cards and IDs in the second wallet recovered at the scene of the arrests. Those items were reunited with their rightful owner, a Back Bay resident who walked into the District A-1 station later the same morning to report that he had lost them after a night at a Downtown Crossing bar.  That victim told police that he didn’t know how the men came to have his belongings.

Hussein is represented by Robert Solomon.  Issack is represented by Paul Derby.  Abdullahi Jama was represented for bail purposes only by Larry Fallon and will be represented by Donatos Lallos at his next court appearance.  Ahmed Jama is represented by Patrick Murphy.  Tahlil is represented by Jessica Dembro.  Each defendant is expected to return to court on Oct. 8.
