One Arraigned as Investigation into Police Firearm Discharge Continues

BOSTON, Feb. 26, 2018—A Randolph man was arraigned today on various charges related to a chaotic scene on Route 93 this weekend and the independent investigation into a State trooper’s firearm discharge is ongoing, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ADERITO MONTEIRO, 28, of Randolph was arraigned in the Boston Municipal Court today on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, disorderly conduct, driving an uninsured all-terrain vehicle, and various civil infractions. Judge Eleanor Sinnott set bail at $2,000 and ordered him not to drive without a license.

Monteiro was one of seven people taken into custody yesterday evening in the area of Exit 18 on Route 93 southbound. The others are expected in court tomorrow on similar charges.

Monteiro was allegedly operating a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle among a large group of riders on motorcycles, scooters, dirt bikes, and ATVs on Saturday evening. State Police had received numerous 911 calls reporting unsafe operation by the members of this group, including on Route 93 southbound. Shortly after 5:00 pm, State Police units attempted to stop and arrest members of this group in the area of Exit 18.

The preliminary investigation suggests that one trooper discharged his patrol rifle in the course of this effort. At about this time, Monteiro sustained a minor injury to the top of his left foot. An ambulance was called to the scene and transported him to Boston Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Investigators are awaiting medical records and complete ballistics testing before drawing conclusions as to the nature of the injury and whether it came from a projectile, projectile fragment, debris, or some other source.

Once all the facts are known, senior Suffolk prosecutors will apply Massachusetts law to the evidence and make an independent determination as to whether any criminal charges are warranted in connection with the trooper’s discharge. This process is standard to all police-involved shooting investigations in Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop.

Investigators have retrieved a significant amount of video footage from Saturday’s incident. Anyone who has additional footage is asked to share it with the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, which may be reached at 617-727-8817.

Monteiro was represented by attorney Manuel Pires. He will return to court on March 26.
