One Held, Investigation Active in Roxbury Shooting and Chase

BOSTON, May 24, 2012—A Dorchester man was ordered held today after being charged in connection with a non-fatal shooting in Roxbury and subsequent motor vehicle pursuit into Milton, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

PAUL NOVA (D.O.B. 4/25/92) was arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance, possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, violating the state’s drug laws in a school zone, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and failing to stop for police.

Assistant District Attorney Andrius Knasas recommended that Nova be held on $100,000 cash bail, that his existing bail on an unrelated heroin trafficking case be revoked, and that he be placed on GPS monitoring if he is released. Knasas also recommended that Nova be ordered to stay away from the victim, witnesses, and area of the crime if released.

Judge Kenneth Fiandaca set bail at $25,000 and revoked Nova’s open bail.

Boston Police responded to the area of Dewitt Street shortly before 12:30 yesterday afternoon for a report of a person shot. They found the 21-year-old male victim at the scene. That man was treated by emergency medical technicians and transported to Boston Medical Center suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators soon learned of a gold-colored vehicle that fled the scene. A short time later, their attention was drawn to such a vehicle turning onto Cabot Street. Additional officers approached that vehicle near the Whittier Street intersection – which abuts Madison Park High School – to speak with its driver.

As they approached, one officer observed one occupant in the driver’s seat begin to drive away, pushing what appeared to be the grip end of a handgun into his waistband. From that point, the driver – later identified as Nova – led police on a chase onto Tremont Street, through the South End, into Dorchester, and finally into Milton, where he lost control of the vehicle and hit a dump truck near Reedsdale Road and Randolph Avenue.

Nova allegedly bolted from the car and fled on foot, with witnesses later telling police that he was carrying a white plastic bag or T-shirt. After a foot pursuit involving Milton and Boston police officers, he was finally apprehended on Lodge Street.

Officers who retraced Nova’s path of flight recovered a white plastic bag containing $7,000 in cash. Also recovered along this path was a large clear plastic bag containing five bags of brown powder believed to be about 10 grams of heroin, along with two bags of white powder believed to be cocaine and two bags of off-white rocks believed to be about crack cocaine, together weighing about four grams.

The investigation into the shooting remains open and very active, Conley said.

Nova was represented today by attorney Greg Johnson. He will return to court on July 2.
