Openings, Empanelment in Two Homicide Trials Today

Two Suffolk County homicide trials are expected to begin today, one with opening statements and one with jury selection.

ELBERT NEWSON (D.O.B. 12/9/88) of Dorchester is charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Thomas Webb. Webb was shot repeatedly on Parker Street near the Bromley Heath housing development on the night of Sept. 15, 2008, and died of his injuries at Boston Medical Center a short time later.

Newson was arrested later the same evening and subsequently indicted for first-degree murder. His trial will be held in courtroom 808 before Judge Christine McEvoy. Opening statements are expected at about 9:30 this morning.

Jury selection is also expected to begin this morning for the trial of JONATHAN CARVALHO (D.O.B. 10/29/89) of East Boston, charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Luis Raul Rodriguez, 29, in Chelsea last year.

Prosecutors say Carvalho went to Rodriguez’ Central Avenue home on the afternoon of Aug. 10, 2010, and shot him to death amid a conflict over a prior disagreement. Carvalho allegedly fled the scene and, later, the state; authorities tracked him to Savannah, Georgia, two days later.

Newson is represented by attorney Stephen Neyman and Carvalho by attorney Willie Davis.
