Two Dorchester men were held on high bails and had their earlier bails revoked after a major marijuana bust led Boston Police to an assault rifle and more than 100 rounds of ammunition, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

RUDOLPH LAWRENCE (D.O.B. 8/14/74) and KAREEM MUHAMMED (D.O.B. 1/1/83) were each held on $750,000 cash bail in the Boston Municipal Court today on charges of trafficking in more than 100 lbs of marijuana.

Additionally, Conley said, both men had their open bails on pending Dorchester charges revoked: Lawrence was on personal recognizance following his February arraignment for possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, and Muhammed had been released on $5,000 cash bail following a firearms possession arraignment in October. Prosecutors had sought $15,000 cash bail in that case.

Based on information developed in an ongoing investigation, Boston Police detectives and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents were engaged in surveillance of the UPS Store on Newbury Street yesterday. Specifically, they were waiting for a person or persons to pick up five 49 lb boxes believed to contain marijuana.

Shortly before 5:00, Lawrence and Rudolph entered the store, retrieved the packages, and brought them to the BMW 320I in which they had arrived. When they drove away from the store, Boston Police and ICE investigators attempted to execute a motor vehicle stop, prompting the men to accelerate and flee at a high rate of speed.

Investigators pursued the vehicle. In the area of Tenean Street, Muhammed allegedly opened the passenger’s side door and discarded the box he had been holding on his lap. He was later charged with littering for that offense, Conley said.

In the area of Walnut Street, the vehicle sustained a flat tire and came to a halt. Both men fled on foot but were apprehended in the rear of an Exponent Avenue address. Both were taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest for fleeing police.

Investigators opened the discarded box and found it to contain marijuana. A State Police drug-sniffing dog was brought to the scene and alerted positively to the presence of drugs in the other four boxes. They, too, were opened and found to contain marijuana. Inside the vehicle, investigators recovered four digital scales.

As a result of their arrests and based on additional intelligence, Boston Police obtained and executed a search warrant at a Franklin Street address to which Rudolph had a set of keys. Inside, they found personal papers in his name along with a Norinco SKS 7.62 caliber assault rifle with a folding stock, a high-capacity magazine for the rifle, and 99 rounds of ammunition. Investigators also recovered another digital scale and a smaller quantity of marijuana.

Rudolph is expected to face charges for those items at a later date.

Lawrence was represented by attorney Arnold Cohen and Muhammed by attorney Lauren Thomas. Both will return to court on June 3, Conley said.
