PROSECUTOR RECOUNTS SLAIN MAN’S LAST MOMENTS

Beau James Youngs died when another man slid a knife between his ribs during a fight that began over the alleged killer’s panhandling technique, a Suffolk County homicide prosecutor said at the suspect’s arraignment today.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury on June 24 indicted KEVIN JAMES (D.O.B. 11/1/66), a.k.a. KEVIN WILSON, for a single count of manslaughter in connection with Youngs’ April 30 stabbing death outside a downtown pharmacy. That charge reflects evidence developed in the two-month investigation that began shortly after Youngs was rushed to an area hospital for a fatal stab wound to his chest.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman of Suffolk DA Daniel F. Conley’s Homicide Unit recommended that James be held on $1 million cash bail, noting that he has an extensive criminal record in states from Rhode Island to California.

“His wife has been looking for him for the past two years so she can serve him with divorce papers,” Hickman told the court.

Suffolk Superior Court Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson set James’ bail at $750,000.

Hickman told Wilson that James was spotted by a security guard at 841 Boylston St. shortly before 11:00 p.m. James, who was sitting on a crate, was allegedly panhandling at the time.

About 45 minutes later, Hickman said, Youngs and another man approached the area and observed James asking people for money or drugs and directing additional comments to women who didn’t give him money.

Youngs and James knew each other, Hickman said, and became involved in a verbal altercation when “the victim confronted the defendant over his conduct.”

Moments later, Youngs’ girlfriend approached the scene and witnessed the verbal altercation escalate.

“The argument between the defendant and Mr. Youngs became physical,” Hickman said.

The security guard who had earlier seen James looked outside and saw the two men grappling. He stepped outside and yelled at them in a bid to stop the fight. The two men separated, Hickman said, and the guard saw a knife in James’ hand. James fled down Boylston Street.

Boston Police and emergency medical technicians rushed to the scene. Youngs was transported to the Boston Medical Center with what turned out to be a fatal stab wound. The knife had travelled into Youngs’ chest beneath his sixth rib and into his heart, killing him.

Boston Police homicide detectives identified James as a suspect based on witness interviews and other techniques. They located him on May 8 and he has been in custody since that time.

Kara Hayes is the assigned victim-witness advocate on the case. James is represented by attorney Michael Collora. He will return to court on Aug. 31.
