Prosecutor: Robbery Suspect Left Scene Before Massacre

One of three men charged in connection with the fatal shootings of four people in Mattapan last year took part in the armed robbery that led to the murders but had driven the proceeds away from scene by the time they were committed, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s chief homicide prosecutor said in court today.

KIMANI WASHINGTON (D.O.B. 10/17/75) of Dorchester was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court this morning following his indictment for home invasion, armed robbery, armed carjacking, trafficking in more than 28 grams of cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm as a Level III armed career criminal.

At the recommendation of Assistant District Attorney Edmond Zabin, Clerk Magistrate Gary D. Wilson set Washington’s bail at half a million dollars – the amount set at Washington’s Oct. 13 arraignment in Dorchester District Court. The indictments, returned Jan. 7, move Washington’s case to Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated.

Zabin told the court that Washington and two others – EDWARD WASHINGTON (D.O.B. 3/28/79) of Dorchester and DWAYNE MOORE (D.O.B. 6/25/77) of Mattapan – were indicted after three months of investigation that included “interviews and testimony of dozens of witnesses including civilians and police personnel, forensic examinations, and analysis of cell phones and video surveillance.”

Among other offenses, Moore and Edward Washington are charged with four counts each of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of Eyanna Flonory, 21, of Dorchester; her 2-year-old son, Amanihotep Smith; Simba Martin, 21, of Dorchester; and LeVaughn Washum-Garrison, 22, of Roslindale. Also shot in the same incident was a 32-year-old Dorchester man, who was grievously wounded and paralyzed from the shoulders down.

The investigation, Zabin said, established that Kimani Washington “with his co-defendant, Dwayne Moore, had at some point prior to Sept. 28 agreed to participate in an armed robbery. The target of the armed robbery was 23 Sutton St., where Dwayne Moore had lived and where he believed there would be large amounts of cash and drugs.”

The Sutton Street address was Martin’s residence and the three defendants set out to his apartment building in the early morning hours of Sept. 28. Kimani Washington waited across the street from the building as Moore called Martin “to draw him outside for the purpose of robbing him.”

As he did so, the surviving victim drove up to the scene to meet Martin in a rented Ford Edge sport-utility vehicle. Martin came out of the building and got into the SUV, Zabin said.

“The defendant, armed with a gun, approached the vehicle,” Zabin said of Kimani Washington. “He ordered them to take their clothes off on the sidewalk.”

Kimani Washington, Edward Washington, and Moore led Martin and the surviving victim into 23 Sutton St. Inside were Flonory, her child, and Washum-Garrison. The assailants took several items, including a safe, a large quantity of cocaine, and a television set.

“All three were armed during the robbery,” Zabin said.

Several of the stolen items were transported to the SUV in which the surviving victim had come to the scene. Kimani Washington then drove that SUV away from the scene and back to Dorchester, Zabin said.

“The plan was to meet up later for the purpose of dividing up the proceeds,” the prosecutor said.

After Kimani Washington drove from the area, his cousin and Moore “marched” the victims up the street to the area of 40 Woolson St., where they were executed. In the aftermath of the shootings, Zabin said, the three robbery participants met up in Dorchester.

“The defendant was apprehended in Manchester, New Hampshire, after police questioned him later that morning while he was in possession of the keys to the Ford Edge,” Zabin said. “Two firearms were recovered from a location where the defendant had stayed. One of those firearms was fired on Woolson Street and one was not.”

Moore was held without bail at his Superior Court arraignment last week. Edward Washington is due for arraignment in the same venue tomorrow morning. Kimani Washington will return to court on Feb. 22 to set a presumptive trial date.

Catherine Rodriguez is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. John Salsberg represents the defendant.
