Public’s Help Sought in Chelsea Hit-and-Run

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes today asked for the public’s help in identifying a motor vehicle that struck and killed 39-year-old Israel Sanchez early Sunday morning.

Investigators believe Sanchez was walking north along Route 16 in Chelsea just before 12:30 a.m. when he crossed the roadway in the area of Washington Avenue. He crossed the eastbound lane without incident; he was struck by an unknown vehicle in the westbound lane, however, suffering mortal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at Massachusetts General Hospital. The vehicle continued travelling west without stopping.

Based on witness statements and evidence recovered at the scene, investigators have a general description of the vehicle and its damage:

• Small in size and dark in color
• Damage to its front end
• Cracked or broken windshield
• May have lost a strip of molding from the windshield area
• May have lost one windshield wiper

Investigators have reached out to area mechanics, glass replacement services, and auto body shops to request their assistance in the event that the vehicle has been brought in for repairs.

“Mr. Sanchez’ family has suffered a terrible loss and they’re looking for answers,” Conley said. “We believe the public, and specifically the area’s repair shops, may be able to help them.”

“In a time of tragedy like this, the public’s help can truly make a difference and provide some solace to the Sanchez family,” said Chief Kyes.
