An Allston man was held on a quarter-million dollars’ bail today following his arraignment on charges that he raped and beat a 66-year-old woman on Gardner Street last week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

“This was a crime of unconscionable brutality,” Conley said of the Aug. 27 attack that also left the Allston woman with severe swelling and bruising in the area of her face and neck.

JOSE SARIANO GONZALEZ (D.O.B. 2/24/89) of 74 Harvard Ave. in Allston was held on $250,000 cash bail, the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney John Seed, the supervising prosecutor at Brighton Municipal Court.

In addition to being charged with aggravated rape, Conley said, Gonzalez was also charged with assault and battery on a person 60 or older for allegedly punching the woman in the face and neck; resisting arrest for running from and then struggling with the arresting Boston Police officers; and receiving stolen property for a stolen credit card that was recovered from his person during booking.

Prosecutors allege that Gonzalez approached the victim on a scooter as she walked along Gardner Street at about 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 27, then lured her to an area between some buildings in the area of 4 Gardner Street. Once there, he allegedly beat and raped her. She was later treated at Tufts New England Medical Center.

Boston Police undertaking an extensive investigation approached Gonzalez on Brighton Avenue early this morning after the victim made a positive identification. Gonzalez allegedly attempted to flee and then began struggling with the officers, who safely effected his arrest a short time later.

Gonzalez’s booking photo will not be released based on the role eyewitness evidence played in his arrest.

“Crimes of sexual violence are abhorrent,” Conley said, “but the violent rape of an elderly woman leaves even seasoned police and prosecutors speechless. We’re committed to an aggressive prosecution and close cooperation with Boston Police in the weeks and months to come.”

Gonzalez was represented by attorney Rudge McKenna. He will return to court on Sept. 30.
