Quarter-Million Bail in Fatal South End Stabbing

A Randolph man was held on $250,000 cash bail today following his arraignment for allegedly stabbing another man to death during an altercation that erupted as the victim kicked and punched at his car, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Boston Municipal Court Judge imposed that bail for DARRYL MITCHELL (D.O.B. 3/13/87), who surrendered himself yesterday to Boston Police after they obtained a warrant charging him with the May 15 death of 29-year-old Andrew Wyman.

Assistant District Attorney Masai King, chief of Conley’s Major Felony Bureau, told Lyons that Wyman – a West Roxbury native who most recently lived in Plymouth – was walking with a female companion on Massachusetts Avenue between Albany Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard at about 8:30 that morning.

The woman was walking “several yards ahead” of Wyman and had words with a man operating what was described as a white, box-shaped car. The man was later identified as Mitchell; the car was later identified as a Dodge Dynasty belonging to a friend.

The woman told Wyman about the exchange, King said, prompting Wyman to engage Mitchell in what became a verbal altercation. Mitchell allegedly drive outbound on Massachusetts Avenue a short distance, then made a u-turn and slowed down as he drove up alongside Wyman.

Wyman is said to have begun kicking and punching at the driver’s side of the car. In response, King said, Mitchell reached out his window and stabbed Wyman in the chest and sped away.

Wyman, mortally wounded, was rushed into surgery at the nearby Boston Medical Center. He died later the same morning.

Using a description provided by witnesses, King said, Boston Police recovered the Dynasty a short time later near 254 Massachusetts Ave. A reddish-brown stain believed to be blood was found on the driver’s side door.

Using the car’s registration information, Boston Police identified Mitchell and detectives made contact with his family. He surrendered to them yesterday.

Kara Hayes is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Attorney Eduardo Masferrer represents Mitchell, who will return to court on June 29.
