Quarter-Million Dollars’ Bail in Domestic Violence Double Stabbing

BOSTON, March 5, 2018—A man who remained at large for more than a year after allegedly stabbing a former partner and a family member who rushed to her aid was held on high bail at his Superior Court arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JEFFREY LABATHE, 27, of Hyde Park was arraigned today on indictments charging him with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder for allegedly stabbing the two women during the 2016 incident, as well as single counts of strangulation, assault and battery on a family or household partner, and aggravated burglary.

At prosecutors’ request, Judge Robert Tochka set bail at $250,000 and ordered Labathe to wear a GPS monitor and have no contact with any victims or witnesses if he posts that amount.

Assistant District Attorney Philip Cheng told the court that Labathe traveled to the Huntington Avenue home of a former romantic partner on the night of Nov. 15, 2016, to retrieve some belongings. Once there, however, he allegedly stabbed, choked, and beat the woman – and when a member of her family attempted to intervene, he allegedly stabbed her as well. The Suffolk County Grand Jury indicted Labathe in January 2017.

“This was a terrifying and nearly deadly case of domestic violence,” Conley said.

Conley said the victims of any crime, including domestic violence, should call 911 in an emergency. SafeLink, a statewide DV hotline, can be reached at 877-785-2020. SafeLink is answered by trained advocates 24 hours a day in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as TTY at 877-521-2601. It also has the capacity to provide multilingual translation in more than 140 languages.

Boston EMS responded to the scene to treat the victims and transported both to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The primary victim’s injuries were so severe that the Boston Police Homicide Unit was notified. Boston Police obtained a warrant for Labathe’s arrest, but he eluded them until Sunday, when they apprehended him in Roxbury.

Labathe returns to court on April 3.
