Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today joined Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis at Boston Police Headquarters and delivered the following remarks on the officer-involved shooting of TYRONE CUMMINGS (D.O.B. 8/27/85) of Dorchester during an incident on Dunbar Avenue this morning:

“Of all the calls a police officer can respond to, few are more volatile than those involving domestic violence. We saw that in stark relief this morning. And while we’re deeply relieved that Officer Marando’s surgery this morning was successful, we’re also mindful that he was shot by a man who – at this early stage – appeared to have been preparing to use deadly violence against an intimate partner.

“We don’t know his intentions, but we know he brought two illegal handguns and a bag full of bullets to the altercation he had with that young woman. When we consider what he may have had planned, we consider it in light of those facts.

“My office has already begun two separate but parallel investigations into this morning’s incident on Dunbar Avenue. Both are being led by senior prosecutors. The first is into Tyrone Cumming’s discharge of a firearm at three Boston police officers, as well as any other assault-related offenses he may have committed against his girlfriend, the female victim, or her child.

“The second investigation is our standard use of force investigation. We review the facts and circumstances of every police-involved shooting to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. At this very early stage, the officers appear to have acted in defense of themselves and others. And while the exact sequence of shots has not yet been determined, there is no question that Mr. Cummings initiated this morning’s gunfight when he produced an illegal firearm and pointed it at responding Boston Police.

“Cummings is currently in custody at the Boston Medical Center. We expect he’ll be arraigned in his hospital bed there on multiple assault, firearm, and attempted murder charges, possibly as early as tomorrow.
“For now, I’d like to wish Officer Marando a very speedy recovery, on behalf of myself and my office.”
