REMARKS OF DISTRICT ATTORNEY DANIEL F. CONLEY ON THE APRIL 8, 2010, HOMICIDE OF JAEWON MARTIN

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, joining Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, today delivered the following remarks urging community cooperation in the April 8 homicide of 14-year-old Jaewon Martin on Parker Street:

“One of the questions we’re asked after crimes as horrible as this one is “Why.” Why did this happen? Why would anyone kill a 14-year-old in cold blood as he stood talking to friends, posing no threat to anyone?

“These are questions we can never answer. And frankly, there is no conceivable motive that would explain the choice to use deadly violence against a 14-year-old child.

“Beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through this very moment, Boston Police and Suffolk prosecutors have been working to identify the person who took Jaewon’s life. We’ve received some help from the public and for that we’re extremely grateful.

“But right now, we need more information. We know from experience that this probably didn’t happen in a vacuum. Someone out there knows who did this, and someone out there can help us take a killer off the street.

“I walked with a lot of families on Sunday at the Mother’s Walk for Peace. The list of children lost to violence in our city is already far too long. But if we can’t shorten that list, we can at least ensure that Jaewon’s family sees justice done.”
