Rental Records, Video Footage Help Identify Murder Defendant, Prosecutor Says

BOSTON, Feb. 14, 2018—One of the men who allegedly took part in the homicide of 21-year-old Shaquille Browder was linked to the crime through video footage and vehicle rental records, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

KYLE L. WILLIAMS (D.O.B. 4/14/86) was arraigned today on one count of murder in connection with the Jan. 11 shooting that claimed Browder’s life. Judge Serge Georges ordered him held without bail on the murder and additionally held him pending a hearing to determine whether he violated the terms of his probation on a 2011 extortion and unarmed robbery conviction for which he served six years.

Assistant District Attorney Catherine Ham of the DA’s Homicide Unit told the court that Williams and others participated jointly in the homicide in broad daylight at a parking lot near Columbia Road and Washington Street – one of the city’s busiest intersections.

Ham said Browder pulled into the parking lot at about 2:00 pm, apparently unaware that he was being followed by a Chevrolet Tahoe and another vehicle. When Browder parked, those two vehicles stopped nearby. Shortly thereafter, Ham said, an occupant of the Tahoe got out, approached Browder’s car, and fired a handgun into it. Browder exited and began to run. At that point, the evidence suggests, he was hit by additional gunfire from the second vehicle.

Video cameras in the area captured the Tahoe’s license plate. That plate was registered to a car rental agency. Rental records revealed that Williams had rented the vehicle and returned it shortly after the homicide, Ham told the court, and Williams was captured on private surveillance as he did so. Boston Police homicide detectives obtained phone records that show Williams was in the area of the homicide at the time it occurred, prosecutors said.

Boston Police tracked Williams to Walpole, where they arrested him early this morning with the assistance of local and regional police. He was represented at arraignment by attorney James Coviello and will return to court on March 14.
