REVERE MAN BRINGS TOY GUN TO ARMED ROBBERY; POTENTIAL VICTIM ORDERS BARTENDER TO GIVE HIM A DRINK

A Revere man was held on $100,000 cash bail and had his open bail revoked today following his arraignment on charges that he robbed a Revere Sons of Italy hall with a toy gun yesterday, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

JAMES M. PARKER, 48 (D.O.B. 10/8/60), was formally charged in Chelsea District Court with four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault on a person over age 60, one count of kidnapping, one count of armed and masked robbery, and one count of resisting arrest, all for his role in yesterday’s incident at 8 Revere St.

Assistant District Attorney John Seed told the court that Parker entered the social club at about noon yesterday wearing a mask and armed with what appeared to be a black automatic handgun.

Once inside, Parker allegedly ordered the female bartender to give him all the money, including change stored in a cigar box and the keys for the poker machines.

When the bartender informed Parker that she did not have the keys to the machines, he ordered her to call to the manager with orders to come down with the keys. The bartender made the call but got no answer; she instead left a message.

At about this time, a 71-year-old male entered the bar and, realizing that there was a robbery in progress, asked everyone to remain calm and told the bartender to get Parker a drink. The defendant allegedly demanded a Skyy Vodka, but when the bartender told him that she did not have that brand of vodka, he took a bottle of Absolut Vodka and a bottle of Dewars Scotch. Parker is also said to have ordered the bartender to get the 71-year-old the drink of his choice.

Witnesses told police that the phone then started to ring, and Parker ripped it from the wall.

A 66-year-old female patron who had been sitting on a stool at the club’s bar then told Parker that due to a medical condition, she needed to use the restroom. Parker allegedly asked her if she had a cell phone, to which she replied that she did not. He allegedly searched her purse before allowing her to proceed to the bathroom.

In fact, the female victim had secreted the cell phone on her person and used it to call Revere Police and report the robbery. Moments later, police cruisers arrived on the scene.

As police units approached, Parker asked the male victim where his car was. He told Parker he had parked his white car outside in the parking lot. When Parker went to the door, several police officers were already outside. Parker placed the 71-year-old in a headlock, pointed the gun at the man’s head, and exited the club.

Revere officers made verbal commands for Parker to drop the weapon. When some officers tried to get closer to him, he pointed the gun – which the officers believed to be real – at them. One officer was finally able to get close enough to Parker to safely disarm him, at which time he was arrested and taken into custody.

Following his arrest, officers were able to determine that the weapon he was carrying was in fact a toy gun.

Parker was represented at his arraignment by attorney Michael Capone. He is due to return to court on June 4 for a pre-trial hearing.
