Robbery Suspect Arraigned after Allegedly Leaving Bank Card at Scene

BOSTON, June 25, 2013—A Mattapan man was arraigned last week on charges he attempted to rob a man who gave him a ride home but ended up leaving behind his own bank card when he fled, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

JERRY BURNETT (D.O.B. 9/12/89) was arraigned in Dorchester District Court on June 18 after his arrest that morning on a warrant charging him with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed assault with intent to rob, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and carrying a loaded firearm.

Assistant District Attorney Darcy Kofol asked that Burnett’s bail be revoked in an open case out of Dorchester District Court charging him with leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage.  Kofol also requested that Burnett be held on $200,000 with conditions of release including GPS monitoring, that he stay away from the witnesses, and abide by a curfew.  Judge Kenneth Fiandaca allowed the motion to revoke Burnett’s open bail and set bail on the new case at $50,000 with the conditions that he wear a GPS monitoring device, stay away and have no contact with witnesses, abide by a curfew, and stay within 15 miles of the city of Boston.

According to prosecutors, Burnett and another man on the morning of June 3 received a ride from a 36-year-old Milton man who believed he recognized the two men when they approached him in Mattapan Square.

While in the passenger’s seat of the man’s 2008 Honda Accord, Burnett allegedly asked the victim for a dollar. As the victim reached into his pocket, Burnett allegedly produced a gun and told him to “Run your pockets.”

The victim pushed Burnett’s hand away and the gun discharged, shooting out the car’s driver side window.  A physical struggle ensued, during which the victim’s car crashed into a utility pole and a cement wall in the area of 439 River St.

As Burnett and the second man attempted to flee, Burnett left behind his bank debit card on the passenger’s seat, prosecutors said.  Two black baseball caps not belonging to the victim were found by police searching the vehicle. One hat was found on the backseat where the second man had been sitting and the other on the floor of the front passenger’s seat where Burnett sat, prosecutors said.  A spent 9mm shell casing was later discovered inside the car.

Based on the bank card and additional evidence developed by Boston Police, detectives obtained a warrant for Burnett’s arrest. On June 18, members of the BPD Youth Violence Strike Force and Chelsea Police Department located Burnett at a Broadway Street apartment in Chelsea on June 18 and placed him under arrest.

Burnett was represented by Paul Carrigan.  He will return to court on July 17.
