BOSTON, June 12, 2014—A Roxbury man was arraigned today on charges he showed up at a high school graduation armed with two loaded guns, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ADONIS ALVAREZ (D.O.B. 7/23/95) of Roxbury was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on two counts each of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm, and a single count each of resisting arrest and receiving stolen property over $250.  Assistant District Attorney Peter Pasciucco of the DA’s Gun Prosecution Task Force requested bail of $25,000 with orders that Alvarez wear a GPS monitor, abide by a curfew, and stay away from the location of the incident in the event that he is released on bail.  Judge Robert McKenna imposed $15,000 and all of the requested conditions of release.

According to prosecutors, Boston Police officers were on patrol yesterday evening in the area of 90 Warren Ave., where commencement ceremonies were being held for McKinley Preparatory High School and McKinley South End Academy.  Shortly after 7:00 p.m., officers observed a man later identified as Alvarez with the hood of his sweatshirt pulled tightly around his hat and face.  Alvarez appeared to be carrying a heavy object in the front pocket of his sweatshirt and had his right hand in the pocket with his arm tight against his waist, which officers recognized as a characteristic of an armed gunman, prosecutors said.

When officers approached Alvarez and identified themselves as police, Alvarez attempted to flee.  Alvarez was brought to the ground but continued to struggle.  Officers recovered a loaded Jimenez Arms .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun from under Alvarez’s head as he resisted officers’ attempts to place him in handcuffs, prosecutors said.

As Alvarez continued to struggle with police he allegedly made statements that he had another firearm in the waist of his sweatpants, which officers were able to secure, prosecutors said.  That firearm, a Ruger .357 caliber revolver, was also found to be loaded.

Officers discovered that the Jimenez Arms handgun had been reported stolen in Hampstead, N.H., in 2007.

“We don’t know what this young man intended to do with two loaded firearms outside a high school graduation, but we can be certain that it was nothing good.  The quick actions of the officers on scene may have prevented this joyous occasion from ending in tragedy,” Conley said.

Alvarez is represented by attorney Steve Topazio.  He will return to court July 7.
