South Boston Man Sent for Evaluation after Two Assaults on Women

BOSTON, July 25, 2013—A South Boston man was sent for a competency evaluation after he was arrested for two attacks on women earlier this week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

EDWIN ALEMANY (D.O.B. 9/2/84) is charged with assault and battery, assault with intent to murder, kidnapping, and threats to commit a crime in connection with the first attack, which took place on Old Colony Avenue on the morning of July 23. He is also charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the second attack, which took place on Gates Street just after midnight on July 24.

After Alemany was interviewed by a clinician at South Boston District Court, Judge Tracey-Lee Lyons ordered him held without bail while he undergoes a 20-day evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital to determine whether he is competent to assist in his own defense. Lyons declined to rule on Assistant District Attorney Nicole Rimar’s motion to revoke his open bail on a pending Roxbury case charging him with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

In the July 23 incident, prosecutors say, Alemany approached a woman in her 20s as she walked on Old Colony Avenue just before 5:00 a.m. Prosecutors say he physically assaulted and threatened her.

In the July 24 incident, prosecutors say, Alemany followed a different woman in her 20s along Gates Street just after midnight. He allegedly stabbed her repeatedly with a knife. The woman screamed and escaped his grasp, and he fled on foot. The victim is expected to survive her injuries.

A witness to this incident was able to provide a good description of the assailant, which matched that of a man who admitted himself to Tufts Medical Center later that morning with a laceration to his hand. That man also matched a description provided by the July 23 victim.

Boston Police arrested Alemany for the July 24 incident yesterday. He was released from the hospital and transported for booking to District 6, but was brought back to Tufts Medical Center after he complained of a medical ailment, delaying his arraignment until today.

Alemany is represented by attorney James Greenberg. He will return to court on Aug. 14 for arraignment.
