Stabbing Suspect, 17, Held in Attack on New Mother

BOSTON, April 2, 2013—A Dorchester teen was arraigned today on charges that she stabbed the mother of an 8-month-old baby while the child’s father held the victim down, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

SAMIA JONES (D.O.B. 2/29/96) was formally charged in Dorchester District Court with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to murder for the incident yesterday afternoon on Midland Street. Assistant District Attorney Brian Brodigan recommended that she be held on $500,000 cash bail, that she be ordered to stay away from the victim, and that she wear a GPS device if she posts that amount; Judge Robert McKenna imposed $50,000 cash bail and all the recommended conditions of release.

Boston Police responded to Savin Hill Avenue at about 4:00 yesterday afternoon for a report of a person stabbed and found Boston EMS treating the victim for multiple stab wounds. Officers observed a blood trail leading to the area of 15 Midland St., where the attack is believed to have taken place. The victim was rushed to Boston Medical Center with injuries to her back, leg, face, and torso.

Based on information developed during the course of the investigation, detectives believe the victim’s former boyfriend and father of her child set up a meeting with her near the Savin Hill MBTA station, claiming that he would give her a pair of sneakers for the child. Instead, investigators believe, he set upon and restrained her while Jones attacked her with a knife.

Jones and the boyfriend fled the scene. Boston Police apprehended Jones at her residence; they could not locate the boyfriend but obtained a warrant for his arrest. When he is apprehended, he will be arraigned in Dorchester court as well.

“For those of us who remember the murders of Kayla and Xavier Ravenell, this case is especially chilling,” Conley said, recalling the murders of a young mother and her infant child murdered by the child’s father and his new girlfriend in 2004. Both assailants were convicted of first-degree murder in 2007. “Thankfully, the victim’s condition has stabilized, but the facts here are deeply, deeply disturbing.”

Jones was represented by attorney Alyssa Pelletier. She will return to court on April 23.
