BOSTON, June 12, 2012—Members of the State Police detective unit assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office were honored by Colonel Marian McGovern today for their work investigating the homicide of an off-duty Revere Police officer five years ago.

Past and present members of the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit received the Superintendent’s Unit Commendation at the 2012 Spring Superintendent’s Award Ceremony at State Police headquarters tomorrow morning. The award reflects Suffolk SPDU’s investigation of the Sept. 29, 2007, shooting death of Officer Daniel Talbot as he socialized with friends and colleagues.

“The circumstances of this case demanded a careful, methodical, and fully-documented investigation,” Conley said. “The men and women of our State Police Detective Unit were equal to that task. They cut through the rumors and speculation of those dark first hours with cold facts and hard evidence developed over days, and weeks, and months. The final adjudication speaks for itself: Four individuals were arrested in connection with Dan Talbot’s murder, and all four were held accountable for their actions. This was outstanding police work by outstanding troopers, detectives, and criminalists.”

Talbot’s killer, ROBERT IACOVIELLO, Jr. (D.O.B. 6/19/87), was convicted of second-degree murder at his 2010 trial in Suffolk Superior Court. He is serving a life term in state prison. Also convicted at trial was JAMES HEANG (D.O.B. 6/19/90), found guilty of being an accessory after the fact to Talbot’s murder and sentenced to three to six years. Two additional defendants pleaded guilty to their roles in the homicide, with DEREK LODIE (D.O.B. 1/2/90) receiving an eight- to 12-year prison sentence for summoning an armed Iacoviello to the scene with a handgun and GIA NAGY (D.O.B. 6/2/90) receiving one to two years for helping to dispose of the murder weapon.

The Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit investigates homicides and other serious violent crimes in Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop, as well as on State property within the City of Boston. Today’s honorees included 14 men and women of ranks ranging from trooper to major, including Major William Christiansen, the unit’s former commander, and Detective Lieutenant Jack Lannon, its current leader.
